Absecon Lighthouse
Absecon Lighthouse
When you are in Atlantic City, New Jersey, you absolutely must visit the Absecon Lighthouse. This is the tallest lighthouse in New Jersey, which in turn make for one of the most breathtaking views imaginable. This lighthouse was built back in the 1800s to help stop the amount of shipwrecks that had been happening along the Absecon Beach. Within the first ten months of operation, the lighthouse did its job and there were no shipwrecks at all.
Construction of the lighthouse took from 1855 to 1857. The height of the tower is 171 feet. There is a stone foundation with a timber wood platform along with double walled conical brick and mortar tower with iron spiral central staircase. This beautiful lighthouse also features a fixed beacon with the beacon distance reaching 19.5 nautical miles.
Being a non-profit organization, all of the events held are fund raiser to help support the lighthouse to keep it lit for many new generations to enjoy for years to come. Some of the great fund raising events that have been held in the past have been a Murder Mystery, a Children's Art Contest, and the Annual Garden Party and Wine tasting amongst countless others.
The Absecon Lighthouse is open to the public and there is a Lighthouse Museum as well as a gift shop on the premises. In the gift shop, you can find great items such as t-shirts, post cards, magnets and much more.
Public Hours are Mondays from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm, closed Tuesday and Wednesday, Thursday through Sunday from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm.
