The Magnificent Argo Gold Mine and Mill, An Historic Site Not To Be Missed!
Located in Idaho Springs, Colorado, The Argo Gold Mine and Mill museum is a great place to check out. It's a national historic site not too far from Denver at all. It comes complete with tours that are educational and fun for the whole family. You'll even get a FREE gold panning lesson on your tour!
Nicknamed "The Mighty Argo" it's a favorite and an extremely educating and entertaining outing for many schools with students of all ages and also everyday people from around the world. All of which come to see some of the history of mining in Colorado and Clear Creek County. Most of the equipment used for gold processing are still there! And while visiting the bottom level of the mill, which is the museum section, you can see old payroll records, milling receipts and even old photographs on display.
When you take your tour of the tunnel, mine and mill, a guide will explain to you all it's history, help you on your walk while checking out the equipment, the tools used by miners and the actual process used for extracting the gold itself. When your tour ends you'll get FREE gold panning lessons, and even get to try your luck with panning itself. There are many gemstones to be found. With a some like Quartz, Garnet, Peridot, Citrine, Diamonds, Topaz, Amethyst, Agate and of course, the state gemstone, Aquamarine. You'll get to keep everything you recover and the friendly staff will even help you to identify all the gemstones you've found!
Open 9am to 6pm SEVEN DAYS A WEEK from Mid April to Mid October. The admission rates are low enough for you to have a great day exploring and learning without leaving your pockets high and dry.
