Arts Center South Florida
Arts Center South Florida
In 1984, a group of artists banded together to create a different kind of art center for the Miami area. This would focus on the bare and vacant Lincoln Road area. A grant was obtained and the group acquired properties to create an artist colony in 21 storefront spaces.
In 1986, the City of Miami recognized the success of this venture and designated the three-block area as the Lincoln Road Arts District. This area has become one of Miami's premier locations to see up and coming artists of the City and Region.
The nearly 60,000 square foot area encompasses 52 artists' studios, exhibition galleries, art education classrooms and administrative offices. Today over 7 million visitors to Miami/South Beach area annually, hundreds of thousands walk down Lincoln Road and view ArtCenter's display windows and exhibitions.
There are a number of touring exhibitions that rotate through the facility every year and another number of impressive permanent exhibitions. At 924 is the name of an ongoing series of screenings and art works at the Arts Center's 924 Lincoln Road building.
There are also special auctions held at the Arts Center to raise money for the upkeep and development of other artistic programs. Another interesting exhibit is by Artist-in-Residence, Susan Lee-Chun and her work is about attempts to move about without any notice, without drawing undue attention to her by assimilating and bringing to notice that unlike any animal or other life form, human beings have definite limitations to camouflage.
The Arts Center is a fantastic way to spend an afternoon when you're in the Miami area. This venue will open your eyes and mind through their diverse collection of uplifting art works.
