Long ago during the ice age, glaciers left finger shaped lakes and receding hills above where the water lines are. Residents believe that event created "air drainage" in the land making it the perfect grape cultivating area in the region. Many of the vineyards are several generations old with experienced wine-makers. These wineries offer tasting experiences, shopping and tours.
Recreation is another big reason why tourists come to this area. In the summer months, Finger Lakes offers camping, hiking, hang gliding, hot air ballooning, kayaking and white water rafting and fishing, just to mention a few. In the winter months, tourist can go ice fishing, skiing, and sledding. There are three major ski resorts in the Finger Lake region.

* Canandaigua- serves as a public water supply to surrounding towns.
* Honeoye- this is the shallowest of the lakes.
* Canadice- this is the smallest of the lakes.
* Hemlock- This Lake supplies all the water to the city of Rochester.
* Conesus- This Lake is known for being quiet and scenic.
