Chicago Historical Society

Founded in 1856, and containing more than 20 million documents and artifacts pertaining to the history of the United States and metropolitan Chicago. The Chicago Historical Society has done an excellent job of preserving and presenting Chicago's long and colorful history and bringing it all to life. Many exhibits on everything from the great fire of 1871 to the rich diversity of sports. You can see Chicago grow from a 1779 riverfront trading post to the modern-day, world-class metropolis.

There are powerful exhibits, films, videos and performances that trace the city's history and culture. See the fur trader's cabin in the "Hands-On History" gallery and learn about the abolition of slavery in American History wing. Moving exhibits cover the city's different neighborhoods.

The Chicago Historical Society has something for everyone, persons of all ages will find a visit here will educate, delightful and inspiring. My Chicago is an exhibit designed for children ages 6-12. A connection of the city's past to present day, using the city's flag to delve into the city's diverse history. Children can download ten print activities in their after school programs as well as play six online games. All designed to educate the young in an appealing way.

The Society offers permanent as well as traveling exhibits regarding the history of Chicago and the country. A few of the exhibits, both permanent and traveling are: Hedrich Blessing photographs by this master photographer of architecture around Chicago. Fashion, Flappers and all that Jazz this exhibit reveals Chicago nightlife in the Roaring '20s.

Experience it all though the trend setting fashion, music and the dance that marked the era. The Teen Chicago Exhibit gives a detailed look at the history of the teen experience, from the child labor reform of the early 1900's to the doo wop sound of the 1950's, then on to the teens of the 70's as well as the other popular culture trends that defined the generations.
