Some of the art is functional,some is pure whimsy. The Museum was founded by Edith Wyle who originally called the facility "The Egg and The Eye" and she was truly passionate about promoting unknown and traditional artisans.
The Museum itself opened in 1974.
Presently, the Museum is the only organization in the city whose sole purpose is the development of public programs designed to benefit and encourage awareness and appreciation of the cultural diversity and history of Los Angeles through folk art.
Another endeavor of the Museum is to preserve and strengthen the folk culture of the community based on its belief that the quality of urban life is directly related to the vitality and diversity of viewpoints and traditions.
Art affects people and no stronger community statements are communicated than though the art of its people.
The International Festival of Masks was founded by the Museum in 1976 and has become a tradition. Numerous Los Angeles schools, ethnic centers, museums and non-profit institutions participate in this yearly even that brings together many diverse groups of people and celebrates diversity.
There are numerous changing events throughout the year and you honestly never know what you're going to find at the Museum. Guest artisans put on demonstations several times a year and there is usually a great exhibition to take in.
