For a beautiful walk back through history, the Fort Garland Museum in Southern Colorado is a welcome sight for all travelers. Fort Garland was established back in 1858, with its force of over 100 men, stood to protect the early settlers in the San Luis Valley.
Fort Garland is rich with military history, and you are invited to walk through the fort and tour the historic adobe buildings. Here you can also get a great sense of the culture and folk art of the Southern Colorado Hispanic community.
As you walk through the Fort, you will be serenaded by a group called the San Luis Mariachis, who are known to perform here from time to time. There are many great things to see and do here at the Fort including wool carding and spinning. These events and many other living history performances take place during the "Celebracion de Cultura" which is held in July.
If you are in the mood for a little shopping while you are visiting the Fort, the Fort Garland Gift Shop offers a wide variety of gifts and souvenirs for yourself and everyone on your list. Here you will find a great collection of books as well as t-shirts and other unique and really affordable gifts.
The museum is located on Highway 159 in Fort Garland, Colorado. Operating hours are from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm daily from April 1st until October 31st and then 8:00 am to 4:00 pm Thursday through Monday, November 1st through March 31st. There is a nominal fee for admission with adults costing $3, Seniors $2.50, children ages 6 - 16 $1.50, and children under the age of 6 get in free. Of course, the museum is also free to Colorado Historical Society member. There is something for everyone in your entire family at beautiful and educational Fort Garland.
