The Hampton-Preston Mansion and Gardens
There is a gorgeous piece of South Carolina history waiting for you in Columbia called the Hampton-Preston Mansion and Gardens. This lovely structure on 1615 Blanding Street, was restored in 1969 and then opened up as a historic house museum later on in 1970. A trip to view this lovely estate can be enjoyed by everyone in your family, especially if you are interested in over 50 years worth of objects that have been preserved within the mansion.
This mansion was owned by the Hampton and Preston families, both of which had gained their tremendous wealth through the operation of cotton and sugar cane plantations. The Hampton-Preston Mansion was first purchased by Wade Hampton I back in 1823. When he died in 1835, he was actually known to be the richest man in the entire United States. After his death, his daughter Caroline moved in with her husband John Preston. Over the years that they lived there, the Preston family made amazing additions to the house, actually doubling it in size.
It is quite amazing to look around this amazing building at the gorgeous architecture. Many people who visit say that they are quite impressed by the stately manor of the structure as well as the wonderful works of art and furnishings that are found on the inside.
