Intrepid Sea, Air, and Space Museum
Intrepid Sea, Air, and Space Museum
A historical visit on board the U.S.S. Intrepid is something everyone will enjoy. It puts you in touch with all the glory as well as the history that took place on this Essex class air craft carrier, turned museum. Commissioned in 1943, it saw service in World War II, and action in the Korean and Vietnam wars. 650 enemy plannes were shot down, and 289 enemy ships destroyed by it's aircraft and onboard weapons. In 1976 orders were made to reduce it to scrap metal, but a foundation was formed. One to preserve and restore this ship so devoted to our sea, air, and space program.
All along the flight deck there are fighters, rescue helicopters and planes all lined up as if they are ready to go into action once again. Sit in the gunner's seat, and for a second imagine how it must have felt to be in battle.
There are many displays inside the Intrepid, including ones of uniforms, weapons, and models. Also you will find multi-media shows featuring historical footage. The Intrepid was used to retrieve several Gemini and Mercury capsules from the ocean, thus finding it's place in our country's space program's history.
Other attractions at this museum are the U.S.S. Growler, (a guided-missile submarine), the USS Edson (a naval destroyer), an A-12 Blackbird (one of the world's fastest aircrafts) and a British Airways Concorde.
Expect to spend at least 3 hours touring all the various attractions.
