The Vance Kirkland Museum was built in 1996 to acquire, display and preserve the paintings of renowned Colorado artist, Vance Kirkland. The Kirkland Museum is located at 1311 Pearl Street Denver, Colorado 80203 303-882-8576. The museum houses the largest collection in the world of Vance Kirkland art and other collectibles of interest related to the life times of this amazing artist. The museum is housed in his historic studio.
The museum has an internationally important display of 20th century arts and crafts and paintings. A major survey of Colorado art history is documented here with more than 150 artists and over 600 works. The primary focus is on the first three quarters of the 20th Century arts. In addition the museums holds works from artist Frank Lloyd Wright and famed potter, Artus Van Briggel.
Vance Kirkland 1904-1981 had a fifty four year career and is remembered as the Founding Director of The Art School at the University of Denver. He produced over 1,100 paintings in watercolor, oil, and his unique and trademark style of a water and oil mixture. He also produced over five hundred painting and etchings using litho crayon,pen and ink, ballpoint pen and charcoal. He was commissioned to do art for Denver Country Club, US Post Office and department stores and private works also.
There is a museum gift shop where you can remember your day at the museum with note cards, postcards, posters, with reproductions of his abstract and surrealistic art. Catalogs and a video of the artist's life are also available for purchase.
