Come and take a trip into Western America's past. The Manitou Cliff Dwellings is a rare historical treasure. Located under a protective red sandstone overhang, authentic Anasazi cliff dwellings, built more than 700 years ago, are waiting to be discovered by you. There are no "Do Not Touch" signs here. You are free to touch and even go inside these fascinating awe inspiring remnants of an American Indian culture that roamed the Four Corners area of the Southwest from 1200 B.C. to A.D. 1300. Tour the incredible cave-dwelling civilization of the ancient Anasazi culture and be amazed at these wonders. These apartment-like caves are over 700 years old and carefully preserved so they remain almost exactly as they were found.
The Manitou Cliff Dwellings is located in Manitou Springs, Colorado, at the foot of Pikes Peak. During the summer months, Native American Indians demonstrate their living culture through traditional dances handed down from generation to generation.
Next to the cliff dwellings is a three-story Pueblo-style building that houses the Anasazi museum and a must see Southwestern gift shop for your souvenirs. This structure was designed and constructed in the style of the Pueblo Indians, direct descendants of the Anasazi.
The outdoor archaeological and natural history preserve includes reproductions of a stone mesa-top building and an Anasazi baking oven. A beautiful walk way with well-labeled native flowers, herbs, trees and other plants connects the cliff dwellings and the Pueblo structure.
You will definitely want to spend the whole day at the Manitou Cliff Dwellings, so you will no doubt get hungry don't worry, a snack bar and picnic patio are open to meet your food and drink needs.
You can arrange for a special tour or are also invited to hold a special event here The dwellings are open seven days a week, year round, except for Christmas Day and Thanksgiving.
