Miss America Pageant - Atlantic City, New Jersey
The Miss America Pageant held in Atlantic City:The Atlantic City Miss America pageant started over 80 years ago in 1921. The concept was derived from a group of Atlantic City businessmen (hotel owners). They needed to come up with a way to keep visitors in their city after the Labor Day weekend. They came up with a contest in which woman posed in their bathing suits. The contest was a success and with the exception of 1928 to somewhere in the 1930's it has been running just as successful. The Miss America pageant was first aired on television in 1954.
The Miss America pageant is made up of 51 young women to represent each state including the Distract of Columbia. These women are then judged on a variety of characteristics. These categories are broken down into, swim suit, evening gown, talent and interview. The winner earns a crown and a title as Miss America for the whole year.
The Miss America pageant has had it's up and downs. As the women's liberation movement has spoken out against it over the years. However the Miss America organization is known for being one of the top competitors for woman's scholarships to date. Although the pageant started off as a way for Atlantic City businessmen to make more money it has changed immensely through the years. The Miss America pageant now focuses on the many dimensions of woman. Celebrating their charm and intelligence and not focusing what they look like in their swim wear.
The Miss America pageant is held every year in mid September. The event is held at the Atlantic City boardwalk convention hall.
