The Museum of Contemporary Art
The Museum of Contemporary Art
For a fun afternoon, check out the Museum of Contemporary Art. This large facility has a number of fantastic exhibits to view. The diverisity of the exhibitions themselves is what makes this museum such a treat. Chicago is a culturally diverse City and that "viva la difference" attitude is reflected in the Museum Of Contemporary Art.
Enjoy an overview of Brazilian Culture with many forms of art represented from music, visual arts, theater, and cinema, while also influencing advertising, fashion, and television.
There is also a great exhibit on Dan Flavin, a truly innovative artist who passed away in 1996 leaving a huge book of work. The exhibition includes approximately forty-five light works beginning with a series called "icons," made from 1961 to 1963, which are constructed boxes with attached incandescent or fluorescent lights. Both Flavin's whimiscal designs as well as political statement pieces are showcased.
A fun exhibit is the 12x12 showcase where up and coming artists from the Chicago area get to show their talents. The work of these unsung artists is a real treat as you're seeing an artist in their fledgling state and you can find a new favorite artist to collect.
There are a many exhibits that highlight artifacts and creations from various Chicago artists. Pieces made from throw-away items, called "Recycled Art" is a thought provoking area, and begs the question to be asked, "What if we all did something like that"?
The Museum of Contemporary Art also has a restaurant and a gift shop so you can pick up some soveniers of your visit to this fun venue.
