Visit The Beattie House
If you love to view Victorian style mansions, make The Beattie House which was built in the 1830s by Fountain Fox Beattie as a present to his wife Emily, is a must see. This fine old example of Victorian style architecture is one of the oldest structures in the City of Greenville. It was abandoned and fell into ruin in the 1940's and in 1949 when the order to raze the property was given, the Greenville Women's Club raised awareness about the home's age and historic value and had the property moved to 1 Beattie Place. The house was moved one more time in 1983 to its current location.
The Beattie House is now the home of the Greenville Women's Club and tours of the home are allowed. You will see the preserved Italian construction, the intricate winding staircase and the detail that was paid to the doorways and even around the fire places.
The Greenville Women's Club has done a lot more for the Greenville community than save a historic house. The group is very active in Community and School with such projects as raising food for the local food pantry, raising funds and awareness about the Fire Department, AFS, Red Cross, First Responders. Helping get donations of items for Town Hall holiday decorations, and even helping to raise awareness in the community for fixing up the local parks with such needed services as fixing Cleary shelter, revamping a well and playground equipment, adding message signs, pruning and planting trees, adding picnic tables and new hamburger stand for one lucky park.
So, by visiting the Beattie House, you can take in some fine old architecture and also support the community of Greenville by seeing all the good that their Women's Club has done to give back so much to Greenville.
