VIsit the C.H. Nash Museum at Chucalissa
The C.H. Nash Museum at Chucalissa, in Tennessee, is just South of Memphis off U.S. 61. This Museum, open Tuesday thru Sunday is built on the site of an original Indian village which was thought to have existed from A.D. 900 to A.D. 1600. Occupying the Memphis area during the Mississippian period, most Native American settlements were dominantly located in the flood plains of large rivers.
The culture of the Native Americans at Chucalissa was characterized by the worshipping of the sun, the building of mounds, and a unique artistic style of their own. Located on a 187 acre area of land in southwest Memphis, the C.H.
Nash Museum at Chucalissa is operated by the Department of Anthropology at the University of Memphis.
The museum, named after its founding director, curates an extensive collection of artifacts recovered during a 40-year period of systematic excavations. The site features a Mississippian mound complex, nature
trail and arboretum, hands-on archaeology lab, and exhibits that explore the history and life-ways of Native Americans of the historic and prehistoric southeastern United States.
At the Chucalissa Museum adults can expect to pay a $5 admission while seniors and children 4-11 can gain entry for $3. Children under 4 are free. While on vacation in Memphis, stop at the C.H. Nash Museum at Chucalissa for an informative history lesson as well as fun for the family.
