John Wilkinson nominated that this until then nameless city be called Syracuse after the ancient Siracusa province of Sicily. He defended his choice by saying he'd noticed the physical similarities of the two places. Both places had salt-water springs and situated near a town called Salina. The city's name was proposed and approved in 1819 by the committee appointed to pick the name.
