Institute of Contemporary Art
Institute of Contemporary Art
Founded in 1963, the Institute of Contemporary Art at the University of Pennsylvania is a leader in the presentation of contemporary art. Through exhibitions, commissions, educational programs, and publications the Institute invites the public to share in the experience, interpretation and understanding of the work of established and emerging artists.
Guided tours are led by professional educators, Penn graduate students and Institute of Contemporary Art staff. Tour requests are accepted by email, fax, and phone with a two week minimum advance booking required.
Designed by the internationally acclaimed architect Adele Naude Santos, the Institute of Contemporary Art provides a unique setting for receptions, meetings, and lectures. The glass and limestone building offers great flexibility. Rent the lobby, terrace, landing, or auditorium for intimate cocktail parties, large gatherings, or a sit-down luncheon or lecture. The spectacular outdoor terrace off the second floor can be tented and heated in cool weather and makes a beautiful setting for music and partygoers on summer nights.
The Philadelphia Museum of Art inaugurated its Video Gallery in 1994, and continues its commitment to new media and technology through an active acquisitions program. This lecture will discuss key works from the permanent collection such as Les Levine's seminal Iris (1968) and a recent work by Peter Rose entitled Odysseus in Ithaca (2004). Curatorial assistant Melissa Kerr has been the curator of Philadelphia Museum of Art Video Gallery since 2003.
Since the 1960s, artists have utilized video to pursue creative ends unattainable in other mediums. Today video is one of the most prevalent mediums and is a vital part of the collection at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the exhibition program at the Institute of Contemporary Art.
