The Old Plaza was an old gathering spot. When Christine Sterling was working to revitalize Olvera Street from ruin, she also worked on the Old Plaza area.
Originally this area was imagined Mexican landscape not unlike the renowned tourist districts of Mexican border cities. The theme of this area was "old Mexico," pitting a timeless, romantic, Spanish-Mexican culture against industrialization, immigration, urban decay and modern life itself.
The streets that border the plaza now feature rows and rows of curio shoppes, and eateries just to name a few. There are a myriad of things to see and do around the plaza.
During the time that the civic department wanted to revitalize Los Angeles and the downtown area, Old Plaza was slated for revitalization due to a major slum area developing due to lack of commercial development.
This unique place is a center for all kinds of meeting places and shops. There are also a number of historical houses in this area. Today, the Plaza and Olvera Street site comprise the forty-four acre El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument, El Pueblo Monument is at once the historic heart of Los Angeles, a popular tourist site, a Mexican-American cultural symbol, and a complex microcosm for shifting cultural and political agendas in Los Angeles.
