The MAK Center
The MAK Center
The Mak Center was founded in 1994 to preserve and protect the landmark Schindler House and serve as a architectural gathering point for Los Angeles. The MAK Center offers a myriad of programs, lectures and exhibits for the city's art community to enjoy.
The MAK Center for Art and Architecture is run and maintained by a Museum in Austria and the group known as the Friends of the Schindler House Organization.
The MAK Center offers six month residencies at the Mackey Apartments that allow internationally acclaimed artists, academics and architects from around the world to come to produce and present their work in Los Angeles.
There are numerous tours available at The MAK center and the year round scheduled programming ensures there is always something interesting to see and learn about at this facility.
One of the City's best known private residences, the Schindler House, is maintained here. This house was built by Rudolf M. Schindler in 1922 and it served as the architect's home and the center of a thriving art movement. There are other fantastically designed homes to tour such as:
Silvertop (John Lautner, 1957)
The Walker Residence (R. M. Schindler 1936)
The Wilson Residence (R. M. Schindler, 1935-38)
The Tierman Residence (Gregory Ain, 1939)
The Yates Studio (R. M. Schindler, 1938-47)
The Bubeshko Apartments (R. M. Schindler, 1938 and 1941)
The Schlessinger Residence (R. M. Schindler, 1952)
The Elliot Residence (R. M. Schindler, 1930)
The Schindler house is acclaimed as the first modernist home designed in California. Conceived as a funky cooperative replete with built in "nests" for nude naps on the roof, the Schindler House is also a fine example of the stereotypical Californian's sustained interest in alternative living.
If you happen to be visiting on September 10, put away your wallet and pocketbook, the MAK Center is free that day in celebration of Schindler's birthday. Regular admission is only $5.
