Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney founded the Whitney Museum of Art in New York in 1931. The museum has a long standing tradition of offering biennial art shows which display lesser known artist works. The Whitney Museum is also known for displaying contemporary American art, more up-to-date than the Museum of Modern Art. The Whitney, is one of a few museums in New York City whose focus is entirely on American art.
The Museum offers a permanent collection and fine changing exhibitions of contemporary and modern American Art, as well as extending opportunities for visitors to experience some of the finest work in the field.
Having four floors of gallery space, there is constantly something going on, including continuously running video and film presentations. With a full calendar of symposia, courses and events they give a great community resource for family education and entertainment.
It will take you between three to five hours to view all of the fine exhibits. Giving an excellent overview of the changes in American art during the last century, you will find the permanent exhibits on the first floor, temporary exhibits will be found on the other three floors as well as the mezzanine.
