Bus to Cernan Earth And Space Center
If you're looking for someplace unique and entertaining to stop for both adults and children on your next visit to Chicago, check out the Cernan Earth and Space Center.
The Cernan Earth and Space Center is a public planetarium on the campus of Triton College in the Chicago suburb of River Grove. It is named for astronaut Eugene Cernan, who flew aboard the Gemini 9 and Apollo 10 missions and, as commander of Apollo 17, was the last astronaut to leave his footprints on the moon.
The Cernan Center's fantastic 44-foot diameter dome theater is equipped with a Spitz 512 star projector, a C-360 35mm film projector, a laser projection system, a large format video projection system, a 2300 watt audio system and scores of slide and special effects projectors.
Using this equipment, the Cernan Center presents a wide range of programs to people of all ages who are guaranteed to leave with a new appreciation of the earth, space and all its wonders.
Current shows include Arctic Light where visitors will explore the cold dark north with the aid of cameras and satellites. Deep Impact explores the scary ramifications of what happened millions of years ago and quite possibly ended the superior reign of the dinosaurs. Also, ways to stop a comet from hitting the earth in modern times are explored. The dinosaurs themselves are the stars of this venture which the little ones will love. There is even a Spanish version of the ever popular Dinosaurs in Space (Dinosaurios en el Espacio).
Discover the Planets is an awesome tour through space and The Eruption of Mount St. Helens looks at the factors that caused the massive sideways eruption in the 1980s. There are dozens of other regular features, choosing which of them to explore during your visit will be the hard part!
