Helenic Museum And Cultural Center
Helenic Museum And Cultural Center
This is a fantastic venue to make a stop at on your next tour of Chicago. This Museum has only been opened since 1992,but has already been designated by Mayor Richard M. Daley as the anchor of the new Greektown redevelopment project, which is transforming the Halsted Street area into a world-class ethnic neighborhood - full of culture and diversity.
This Museum's mission is to preserve the history of the Greek immigrant experience in America, to showcase the artistic work of the Hellenic people in the visual, literary and performing arts, and to celebrate the Hellenic culture of antiquity that is their very heritage.
There are a number of fantastic exhibits and all visitors both those of Greek descent and those merely fans of Greek design and culture will get a kick out of this venue.
The articfacts and displays were nearly all collected through donations, and current exhibitions include: photographs of family members as well as organizations, business and trade images, phonograph records, icons, embroideries, books in Greek and English, household items, correspondence and military items. Suprisingly, many of these items were slated for merely being thrown away instead of recognized for their historical purpose.
The Museum is a wonderful place to learn about the Greek culture and see life from the turn of the last century immigrants to the modern day Greek culture that adds to much flavor to the City of Chicago.
If you happen to be in the Chicago area, make the Helenic Museum and Cultural Center a stop along the way and spend an afternoon learning how much quiet influence the Greek culture has had on this fine city!
