The Lowry Park Zoo is located at 1101 West Sligh Avenue, Tampa, Florida. The Zoo was established in the late 1930's on the Hillsborough River. The collection of animals was small and included mainly indigenous animals such as alligators and a variety of exotic birds. As the collection grew the city of Tampa recognized the need to move the zoo to a more central location. Today the Lowry Park Zoo is recognized as one of the best in the nation. It is the Tampa areas only dedicated zoologic park.
There are 56 beautiful acres to explore. The amount of acreage allows the zoo to create natural habitats for its residents. This is turn enables visitors to really get a feel, and learn more about the animals at the zoo. They include an Asian Domain, an Australian themed children's zoo, and a Primate World along with an Aviary. The zoo is home to more then 1,600 animals.
The Lowry Park Zoo offers many ways to interact with the animals through shows, lectures and the River Odyssey Ecotour. They offer hands on education, and the chance to get up close and personal with animals such as the kangaroo, wallabies, horses and birds to name a few. Their mission is to educate us about the natural world and its inhabitants.
The zoo is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. except for Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. The cost of admission varies and there are many different passes and combinations available. For information on costs and programs call 813-935-8552.
