If you're going to be in the Chicago area, make the Morton Arboretum a stop along the way. This is great way to spend an afternoon exploring 1,700-acres of beautiful gardens, world-renowned plant collections, and rare and unique natural areas.
A fun venue is the drive through which is 9-miles of paved roads which you can explore via charter bus and if you so choose, park your bus and trek over 14 miles of trails. Stop by the Big Rock Visitor Station and the Prairie Visitor Stations to discover these natural areas.
If you want to see the Arboretum a different way, take a ride on the Acorn Express open-air tram for a one-hour guided tour of the Arboretum grounds. Trams leave every hour.
The Arboretum is home to the Illinois Millennium Landmark Tree! A very special tree planted to commemorate the turn of the century.
Best of all, if you have specific questions about your own trees and shrubs back home, there are experts available to answer your questions about these subjects.
Pets are not allowed at the Arboretum and certain activities such as ball playing, frisbee, biking, rollerblading, etc. They also ask that you do not, or allow your children to climb the trees and do not pick any of the fruits you will see growing on many of the trees here. For current topics, there is a good display about West Nile Virus and its control at The Morton Arboretum.
The The Visitor Center (open daily 7 a.m. - 5 p.m. CST and 7 a.m. - 7 p.m. DST) offers a variety of services to you on your visit the Arboretum. Such as discovering trails, tours, and other destinations on the grounds, as well as activities and current events for you and your group to participate in.
Permanent exhibits highlight Arboretum history, plant collections and natural areas, plant research, seasonal areas of interest. A visit during the fall changing of the seasons is highly recommended.
