Buffalo Bill's Museum and Grave
Buffalo Bill's Museum and Grave
The Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave give you an inside view to the life and times of a legend named William F. Cody. Nicknamed "Buffalo Bill" because of his skill as a buffalo hunter, he did many things in his life including herding cattle, mining for gold, working on a wagon train, riding in the Pony Express and much more.
There are many events and happenings throughout the year at the museum. One of the most popular is the reenactment of his burial. Just thirty minutes from downtown Denver, visitors can participate in the "parade" up to Lookout Mountain where he was buried overlooking the Rockies and the Great plains, just where he wanted to be buried. You'll be able to smell the Ponderosa Pines and "watch the mountain wildlife" pass by.
Another event that's fun for all is Buffalo Bill's Birthday Bash. Filled with a collection of Buffalo Bill look-alikes, cake and games like Pin the tail on the buffalo for the children and of course, the annual Buffalo-Chip Tossing Contest!
The Museum space is filled with permanent exhibits that are there year round such as a time line of his life, his life as a showman, his relationship with the American Indians, the firearms that were popular during his time and for the kids a "Cowboy Corral" where they can design a brand, dress-up and even try to lasso a calf! It's interactive fun for all ages. The temporary exhibits rotate every fall and include things like a great exhibit on the horses he loved. There are artifacts having to do with him and his horses like paintings, photos, saddles and other gear. Everyone seems to know about the rider, but they also need to know that the heroes of history couldn't have gotten around as they did, or gotten away from trouble as fast, without their horses.
So check out the museum and the grave and walk away with a little piece of history learned.
