The El Pueblo Museum
The El Pueblo Museum is located on the actual site of the historic trading post, El Pueblo, which was built north of the Arkansas River back in 1842. There are many interesting and fun exhibits on display here appropriate for the entire family.
Among these permanent exhibits, you can learn about the region through prehistoric times dating back to 1900. During this time, the railroad system and commercial development was helping to make Pueblo the main industrial center in Colorado. Within El Pueblo, the occupants farmed, traded and ranched in and around this settlement and trading post. This structure, which was made of adobe, was built around a secure interior plaza.
Back in 1854, a group of Apaches attacked the post, which left the site abandoned forever. That was, until 1989, when a group of archaeologists began to uncover the buried past of El Pueblo, and started to expand and enrich our knowledge of the events of the past along the Arkansas River.
Currently, the El Pueblo Museum is undergoing major renovations to be able to enhance the area and facilities to help it grow into an amazing historical site and community center. An estimated $7.2 million investment is expected in the renovation of this wonderful historical site. The new vision for El Pueblo is to increase tourism to the area and raise the visitor count at the museum up from approximately 17,000 to 45,000 within the coming years.
The current cost of admission at the museum is $4 for adults, $3 for senior citizens, $3 for children ages 6 and 12, and free for children 5 and under. Of course, Society Members are always free.
