Fort Vasquez Museum
Come and visit the site of an 1835 fur-trading fort at the reconstructed Fort Vasquez Museum. Here you will learn about the history of the fort and its founders, Andrew Sublette and Louis Vasquez.
The Fort Vasquez Museum is located 35 miles northeast of downtown Denver on U.S. Highway 85. Here you can take in annual educational events which include the Fur Trade Rendezvous for Kids throughout September and May and the Rendezvous Workshop Series in October and April.
If you are looking for an interesting and educational outing, you can also take a completely guided tour of the Forts. This a tour of the Four Forts that run along the South Platte River, guided by individuals who are very knowledgeable about each site along the way. If you choose to participate in such a wonderful tour, you will be shuttled by bus to each of the four fur trading forts that all operated within a small radius of one another during the late 1830s.
For the history buff who is also looking to take in a little bit of shopping while on their trip, the Fort Vasquez Museum gift shop features a great selection of books that relate to all of the aspects of the fur trade as well as the Native Americans from the Colorado area.
Admission is completely free at the Fort Vasquez Museum as well as the ample parking. Operating hours are different throughout the winter and summer months and the museum closes for all major holidays. Summer hours are as follows: Memorial Day through Labor Day, Monday through Saturday hours are from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm, Sunday is from 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm. Winter hours are Labor Day through Memorial Day, Wednesday through Saturday from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm and Sundays from 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm.
