Museum of Contemporary Art - Denver
If you're looking for a great place to spend an afternoon on your next excursion to Denver, check out the Museum of Contemporary Art.
This museum is fairly new as it only opened in 1996. The Museum of Contemporary Art/Denver was formed with a very clear purpose in mind, to provide Denver with a major contemporary art museum. The MCA has 7,000 square foot and it is built out of a renovated fish market in the Sakura Square in downtown Denver.
MCA is a unique in its approach to having exhibitions, as it has no permanent collections for the facility and presents only the most innovative and thought provoking artworks. The MCA interprets its own unique role as the presenter of the art works and not just a storage facility for great art. Therefore, the walls are always changing and even if you are a frequent visitor to the MCA, you will always see something different.
Towards the end of 2005, the MCA is moving to a new 25,000 square foot facility which will mean a lot more room to showcase their unique collection of art works. MCA's new facility is both visionary and elegant. It will be a 21st century city landmark and a tourist destination that contributes to the revitalization of the Lower Downtown area of Denver.
This new facility will offer up permanent collections and an ongoing review of local artists on a timed basis for the short term exhibits that the MCA has always participated in.
The Museum of Contemporary Art has a number of fine exhibits going on at any one time and you can see them all at your leisure in an afternoon's stroll around the facility, and taking in up and coming artistic talents is a great way to spend an afternoon in Denver.
