Oleta River State Park
Oleta River State Park
If you're looking for something a little different to do on your next outing in Miami, consider spending a day at Oleta River State Park where you can kayak, enjoy mountain biking, camping in air-conditioned cabins, swimming in the warmer months, fishing is great all year around, trail walking and picnicking. All of this is located around beautiful Biscayne Bay.
This river has a long history. As early as 500 BC, the river was home to the Tequesta Indians who camped along the river's shore. Remnants of the people who made their home here are still found today in the form of simple tools and arrowheads. When Spaniards first visited the area they encountered bear, deer, panthers, bobcats, wolves, alligators, manatees and numerous birds and small animals.
If you happen to be visiting during the cooler months biking and kayaking are the most popular activities and be sure to bring your camera, porpoises are frequent visitors to Biscayne Bay and are intently curious about anyone or anything that is in "their" water. Best of all, you can rent kayaks, canoes and bikes so you can travel light and arrive to have a great day out on the Bay.
Oleta River State Park is also a mainstay for several movies and television shows to film. Bad Boys II, CSI Miami and Showtime have all filmed at the park.
Oleta River Park is Florida's largest urban park and if you travel to the Northside of the park, you will be treated to a stand of beautiful mangrove forest. If you want to paddle a canoe or kayak in this area, it is allowed but you must not touch the mangroves as they are fiercely protected.
This Park is a great way to spend an afternoon and if you have porpoise lovers in your family, they will love the chance to see these fascinating creatures up close and personal!
