There are well over 3,000 animals that live at the Houston Zoo that need constant care and attention by the professional, dedicated staff on board.
There are several great eating places within the zoo area sure to satisfy whatever wild hunger you may have. The Macaw Cafe has a great menu that offers such things as hot dogs, garden burgers, chicken breast sandwiches, fruit salad, taco salad, nachos, chicken tenders, french fries and more. There are even great carts stationed throughout the perimeter where you can pick up a tasty frozen treat or a icy cold bottle of water.
There are some really cool amphibians on display at the zoo such as the black mamba, gaboon viper, komodo dragon, Rio Grande leopard frog and more. If you are one who likes to look at fine-feathered friends, there are also a wide variety of birds on display as well. Chilean flamingos, Indian runner ducks, Congo peafowl, burrowing owls, blue-bellied rollers and hawk-headed parrots are just a few that you can see during your visit. There are many other animals as well like lions, monkeys, camels, prairie dogs, elephants, giraffes, tigers and more.
The hours that the zoo is open for your enjoyment are from 9:00 am until 6:00 pm March through September and 9:00 am until 5:00 pm from October through February. The only day of the year that the zoo closes down is on Christmas day. Admission prices are $8.50 for adults, $4.00 for children ages 2 to 11, free for children under 2 years, $5 for seniors age 64 and older and members get in for free. The cost to ride the Wildlife Carousel is $2 and only $1 for members.
