Chucalissa Archaeological Museum, Memphis
The Chucalissa Archaeological Museum, in Tennessee, is just South of Memphis off U.S. 61. This Museum, open Tuesday thru Sunday is built on the site of an original Indian village which was thought to have existed from A.D. 900 to A.D. 1600. Occupying the Memphis area during the Mississippian period, most Native American settlements were dominantly located in the flood plains of large rivers.
The culture of the Native Americans at Chucalissa was characterized by the worshipping of the sun, the building of mounds, and a unique artistic style of their own. Located on a 187 acre area of land in southwest Memphis, the Chucalissa Archaeological Museum is operated by the Department of Anthropology at the University of Memphis.
A historical national landmark, the Chucalissa Museum is a reconstructed village featuring several family dwellings, a shaman's hut, and a large mound where a chief's temple is located. Archaeological trenches still exist, which usually attracts the attention of children for exploring. The Museum at Chucalissa offers information on the area natives, research information, artifacts found on site, as well as a gift shop containing authentic Native American Arts and Crafts, books, and music.
