The Cultural Heritage Center in Pierre
The Cultural Heritage Center offers a unique and appealing experience for those who enjoy learning about the heritage of South Dakota. The structure of the center is not that of a typical museum, but is the modern-day version of a typical Native American dwelling. Your interest in this museum is intensified as you view the museum which is built into the side of a hill with most of the museum being underground. The center is as long as two football fields surrounded by a variety of native grasses.
Once inside the Cultural Heritage Center, one will find hands on exhibits that trace the history of South Dakota through the end of the 20th century. Enjoy viewing artifacts of the Sioux tribes, ranchers, and miners of South Dakota. Take a stroll through a sod house while listening to stories from a pioneer woman. A Lakota teepee can be viewed up close and you can also view a gold mining operation replica.
