This art museum was started as a small and humble art gallery during the Depression years of the 1930's and in present day, has one of the best collections of regional art in the country.
There are a huge number of fine artists represented here such as Washington Allston, John Gadsby Chapman, Martin Johnson Heade, George P.A. Healy, John Ross Key, Georgia O'Keefe, William Tylee Ranney, Helen Turner, and Catherine Wiley. In addition, the museum has an impressive collection of contemporary art that includes works by such artists as Ronmare Bearden, Hans Hoffmann, Jasper Johns, Lee Krasner, and Andy Warhol. There are also numerous exhibitions by up and coming Souther Artists from not only Greenville, but all of South Carolina.
The museum is very child friendly and there are a number of "hands on" exhibits for children to experience art and the creation process. There are a large number of lectures and special exhibitions scheduled throughout the year and usually there is no extra charge for admission to these special events.
