The Horse Barn Arts Center
The Horse Barn Arts Center is located in Falls Park in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. It was built in the late 1800's, but no one is exactly sure what its purpose was supposed to be. In the 1930's the barn was acquired by the city of Sioux Falls and used for storage. In 1998, it was decided that the barn should be put to better use, and in 1999 the Horse Barn Arts Center was born.
The Horse Barn Arts Center displays all kinds of works, from sculptures and paintings to pottery and ceramics. There are two separate galleries at the Horse Barn Arts Center. The Loft Gallery, in the hayloft of the barn of course, plays host to a different exhibit each month. The artwork on display is by local and regional artists. The Portfolio Gallery is on the main level of the Horse Barn Arts Center, and it is dedicated to the display of local artists' works. The work is displayed on a rotating basis so that all of the artists' exhibits can be viewed in a fair manner. This means that you should visit the Horse Barn Arts Center often because it is quite possible that you will see different art every time you go.
The Horse Barn Arts Center hosts many kinds of events relating to art. Invitationals encourage artists to create their artwork in different ways. There is a regional high school exhibit, held each spring to coax high school students into submitting works. Not only do the students get a chance to have their work viewed at the Horse Barn Arts Center, but awards are also presented. The Horse Barn Arts Center also hosts an open mic night on the third Tuesday of every month from 7p.m. to 9p.m. Additionally, some classes and workshops are offered by the Horse Barn Arts Center.
The Horse Barn Arts Center is open year round, but the hours vary. Call for more information.
