Hunt-Phelan Home, Memphis
Between 1828 and 1832, alot of blood sweat and tears went into the construction of the Hunt-Phelan Home, of Memphis,Tennessee. The red brick which covers the outside of the home were handcrafted on the construction site by slaves who labored to build the home.
Marked for demolition the Hunt-Phelan Home was saved in the name of urban renewal and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. The Hunt-Phelan Home was designed by Robert Mills, who was also responsible for the design of the Washington Monument and part of the White House. Almost converted into a bed-and-breakfast, the Hunt-Phelan Home has been continuously owned by the same family for 150 years and is filled with original furnishings that elicit pre-Civil War glory days.
During the years of the Civil War The Hunt-Phelan Home served as the headquarters for Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, but when the war drew to a close the home was used by teachers from the North as a school for former slaves. The Hunt-Phelan Estate is one of the oldest and most historic in Memphis, consisting of the Hunt-Phelan Bed and Breakfast, an exclusive restaurant, and many 1st class amenities.
