LaFramboise Island Nature Area, Pierre
Located in the Missouri River, the trees and meadows of the LaFramboise Island Nature Area serve as a home to a variety of wildlife and birds, including the bald eagle. Take the family and enjoy a picnic while watching nature in its finest.
Located on the southwest side of Pierre, 1301 Farm Island Road, the two-mile long island serves as a get-away for many people. Whether you enjoy hiking, biking, or walking, you will find the trails as a place of solitude as the trails wind through large stands of cottonwood trees and along the Missouri River. The island was originally referred to as "Bad Humor" by Lewis and Clark as they passed through the area in the early 1800's. The current name, LaFramboise Island, is named after the builder of Fort LaFramboise, Joseph LaFramboise. At one time, parts of this island were farmed.
