Mount Moriah Cemetery In Deadwood

You simply cannot visit the area of Deadwood, South Dakota without a stop at the historical Mount Moriah Cemetery. This is a visit that is not only interesting, but educational as well. Some of the residents at the Mount Moriah Cemetery are quite famous, and many visitors love to snap photographs of certain markers and gravestones that they find along the way.

Mount Moriah Cemetery was put together back in 1877 and 1878 to help meet the demands on the old cemetery that was located in the area. During this time, many of the people who had been buried in the old cemetery were moved off to the new location. Sometimes, many of the locals will report finding some of the remains while digging around on their property.

For the person who loves to study the history of cemeteries, you will find that there are several graves of children found throughout Mount Moriah Cemetery, along with three different Potter's Fields. These are actually areas in a cemetery that were used to bury prostitutes, indigents and surly individuals back in the day.

However, people do travel to Mount Moriah Cemetery from miles around to pay a visit to the graves of some of the more popular residents on hand. These residents being James Butler Hickok, otherwise known as Wild Bill Hickok and Martha Canary, also known as Calamity Jane. Be sure that you bring along your camera, as it is quite neat to be able to have your picture taken along these gravestones at Mount Moriah Cemetery.
