The National Civil Rights Museum of Memphis

National Civil Rights Museum, Memphis, Tennessee is a unique and historical place of remembrance. It was the first and is the largest museum depicting the struggle of The Civil Rights Movement.

The museum was once the Lorraine Motel This where Martin Luther King was standing giving one of his motivational speeches when he was assassinated. A small minority-owned business in downtown Memphis owned and run by Walter Lane Bailey who kept a few rooms as a shrine to Dr. King and to Bailey's wife, Lorraine, who died of a brain hemorrhage just hours after King was shot, and became well known in the area.

The museum consists of interactive multimedia exhibits that places you in the civil rights movement and learn its history from the 1600s through Rosa Parks and the freedom riders until today. Interactive displays such as an old city bus that you enter, where upon sitting down you are told to go to the back of the bus. Another of the interactive displays you will find yourself in a very small and uncomfortable jail cell like Dr. Martin Luther King and other civil rights workers who were crammed into these cells just for protesting and trying to shed some light on their fight for freedom.

It gives a sense of what it must have felt like before the civil rights movement took place and makes you wonder how that could have ever been in the land of freedom and equality.

You will travel through the voice of struggle from slavery to the civil war to the present. Prepare to spend some time here because it is a lot of information to absorb.
