The Old Gray Cemetery

When you are visiting Tennessee, you will probably be in search of a few truly unique attractions. If this is the case, you should stop by the Old Gray Cemetery in Knoxville. This is a really gorgeous trip for anyone, where you can see a place that is rich with over 150 years of interesting history. There are said to be about 5,700 burials at the Old Gray Cemetery since it was established.

The Old Gray Cemetery was established back in 1850, and now sits on about 13 acres of some really wonderfully landscaped grounds. People are delighted with the wooded garden atmosphere that they find complete with a variety of trees and lush, natural vegetation. You have the choice of either walking or driving through the area so you can view all of the classic Victorian art and architecture.

Over the years, there have been a great many gorgeous monuments placed in the Cemetery. Many of these monuments are Victorian in nature, such as fingers pointing toward heaven and Victorian angels. Each monument symbolizes something different, such as the sleeping lamp, which is known to be a memorial to the many children who have died due to certain illnesses or epidemics.

The hours that you may stop by for your visit at Old Gray Cemetery are during normal daylight hours every single day of the week. The Old Gray Cemetery is located at 543 North Broadway, adjacent to the Knoxville National Cemetery. If you have any questions or if you would like to inquire about any ancestral graves, you may call (865) 522-1424.
