Pettigrew Home and Museum
The Pettigrew Home and Museum hosts history about family and social life in the Siouxland in the late 1800s and early 1900s. It allows visitors to get a better idea of the everyday life in Sioux Falls then as compared to modern day. The Pettigrew Home and Museum is one of two Siouxland Heritage Museums that were established to help spread knowledge of Sioux Falls history.
The Pettigrew Home and Museum was originally a simple residence for a former politician. South Dakota's first full-term U.S. Senator, Richard F. Pettigrew, resided here with his family, purchasing this 1889 Queen Anne home a few years after he finished his term. He purchased the home in 1911 and made an arrangement so that the house would be donated to the city upon his death, which occurred in October 1926.
Inside the Pettigrew Home, you can see how the decor gives a glimpse of a political family's life at the turn of the 20th Century. The detailed woodwork and beautiful jeweled glass windows display nothing but exquisite taste. The inside of the Pettigrew Home may only be toured with a guide, so be sure to schedule that before you arrive.
Museum exhibitions are numerous at the Pettigrew Home and Museum. They cover Sioux Falls history from the late 1800's to 1920. Included in the galleries are an introductory video running approximately 11 minutes, interactive computer stations, and many artifacts and photos.
