Prehistoric flashback at Dinosaur Park near Rapid City
Dinosaur Park was originally developed and built in 1936 by the City of Rapid City and the Works Progress Administration, and it is now listed on the national register of historic places at the U.S. Department of the Interior.
Emmett A. Sullivan along with the help from several South Dakota Natural History buffs, made five life-sized concrete dinosaurs that accurately depicted the knowledge of dinosaurs at that time. Dinosaur Park is located in a prime spot on top of one of the many hills that surround the town of Rapid City. This spot features some phenomenal views of the city and surrounding areas.
It is believed that Dinosaur Park's sculptures were originally gray, but now they are painted a vivid green, with touches of pinkish red. All of the dinosaurs at Dinosaur Park were built to their actual size, and they have become quite a sight when visiting Rapid City. The largest of the dinosaurs is the Brontosaurus, and it is easily seen for many miles.
Dinosaur Park, with its towering stone creatures, has become a local landmark. Kids of all ages will love climbing on these massive creatures. At Dinosaur Park there are many opportunities for one of a kind family photographs with towering mammals in the background. It is a must see for anyone visiting the Black Hills area.
The dinosaurs are lit up until 10 pm during tourist season and there is a gift shop at the base of the hill. Dinosaur Park is open year round and is free to the public.
