The South Dakota National Guard Museum in Pierre
If military history is of interest to you, then you should stop at the South Dakota National GuardMuseum in Pierre. Attention grabbing exhibits begin as you near the building with a Howitzer,Armored Personnel Carrier, Sherman Tank and Anti-Aircraft guns located outside the museum.
Once inside, you'll find exhibits displaying the history of the South Dakota Army and Air National Guard, as well as the South Dakota Militia. Displays include the Civil War Period, Spanish American War and Mexican Border Period, World War I and World War II, Korean War, Desert Storm, Bosnia Peace Keeping Mission, and Operations Noble Eagle and Enduring Freedom.
The South Dakota National Guard Museum is only one of 20 authorized National Guard museums in the nation, which was established to preserve, protect and display military equipment, records, relics and memorabilia. The museum educates the public and the National Guard members about the South Dakota National Guard about times of war and peace.
The Museum is located at 301 East Dakota in Pierre and is open Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tours are by appointment only and can be arranged by calling (605)224-9991.
