The Stax Museum of American Soul Music began as a very small record store in an old movie theater at the corner of McLemore Avenue and College Street in Memphis. It grew to become one of the most important music recording studios in the world. When the Capitol Theater in the heart of Soulsville USA became Stax Records in 1959, it began launching the careers of unknowns who would become icons and superstars of American music, hit after hits of soul music by artists such as Isaac Hayes, Otis Redding, the Staple Singers, Wilson Pickett, Luther Ingram, Albert King, Booker T. and the MG's, Johnnie Taylor and many other artists whose legendary talents still remains important in the music of today. On its many labels, Stax Records also recorded such legends as Big Star, Rev. Jesse Jackson, Bill Cosby and the Grammy-winning comedian Richard Pryor.
Stax Museum of American Soul Music is a 17,000-square-foot museum with more than 2,000 exhibits, artifacts and memorabilia celebrating the legacy of American soul music. Included are films, photographs, records, clothing, instruments, Isaac Hayes' gold-trimmed 1972 'Super Fly' Cadillac El Dorado and other artifacts from Stax Records' lively history.
