The Hampton-Preston Mansion was first purchased by Wade Hampton I back in 1823. When he died in 1835, he was actually known to be the richest man in the entire United States. After his death, his daughter Caroline moved in with her husband John Preston. Over the years that they lived there, the Preston family made amazing additions to the house, actually doubling it in size.
