Visiting The State Capitol In Pierre
The State Capitol located in Pierre, should be on your list of places to visit in South Dakota. The capitol is a stunning site built from a variety of native field stone, marble, granite and Bedford limestone with Terrazzo floor which includes blue signature stones of Italian artists. If you are someone you're visiting Pierre with is a fan of architecture, this is a definite "must-see".
The major interests of South Dakota are reflected in the large murals of Greek goddesses located in each corner under the dome. The Capitol is a beautiful attraction with the variety of hand laid stone,brass, and carved woodwork and marble which has made the Capitol the most fully restored capitol building in the United States.
Built in 1910, the State Capitol was recently restored and can be found on the National Registry of Historical Places. The Capitol Complex includes 16 buildings, 48 acres of culture grass, and a lake, as well as thousands of trees and flowers located on approximately 115 acres of property.
Guided and self-guided tours are available. Guided tours must be pre-scheduled several days in advance as the tours are guided by volunteers. To pre-schedule a tour, call (605) 773-3765. Self-guided brochures can be obtained in the Security/Tour Office. The Capitol Building is open from 8a.m. to 10:00 p.m. 365 days a year.
