American Theater, Charleston
Located in Charleston's historic downtown, the American Theater opened in 1942 and was named to honor the service men, war workers and Americans across the nation. It served as one of the few premiere movie houses in Charleston with a small stage, projectors and sound equipment. Due to the popularity of the theater, 200 seats were added after and the stage was enlarged only five years of business.
Changes came in the 1960's when attendance was low and the theater struggled to continue after the introduction of the television. In 1977, the theater finally closed its doors, standing vacant until purchased in 1997.
The theater, as you see it today opened in 2003 as a primary meeting and convention business. The fully renovated building offers the most advanced technology with top - notch service and style that is not found anywhere else.
