St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church was actually the very first Roman Catholic Church to come about in the region of Georgia and the Carolinas.
This Classical Revival style building that is home to St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church was completed in 1839 after the original structure was almost completely destroyed by a fire. The inside of this building is just amazing, from the high ceilings down to every little ornamental detail. There is even a gorgeous painting up on the ceiling that dates back to 1814, done by a gentleman named John S. Cogdell.
Guests are always welcome at the church, and this would make a lovely visit for anyone, especially if you are fond of religious architecture. The large pillars out front are quite wonderful to look at amidst the beautiful trees located around the perimeter. People often gather outside of the location on Hasell Street so that they may snap a few pictures of the lovely building in historic Charleston.
