A Date With Lady Luck at Narragansett Pier Casino
The Narragansett Pier Casino is one of the most famous and prominent sights to see in the Rhode Island town of Narragansett.The Casino is one of the oldest structures in the town, once serving as the epicenter of the town's activities. Built between 1883 to 1886, the Casino was known as one of the most popular resorts in America during the late 1800's. The casino was home to many activities, such as tennis, boating, cards, bowling, shooting, billiards and more. The Casino was also home to some stores, restaurants, a ballroom, a theater and a bandstand. Dancing was rather popular in the casino as well, and it was a nightly activity.
On September 12th, 1900, a fire started at the nearby Rockingham Hotel and the Casino caught aflame very quickly. The wind was rather violent that day, and the fire could not be put out, so it wiped away the majority of the Casino, except for it's two large main towers. Soon after the fire, work began to build a new Casino started, and this new Casino was finished in 1905. The remaining towers of the original casino went under renovation in 1910.
Ever since then, the remnants of the Narragansett Pier Casino have been standing tall. During the last hundred years, the original casino's towers have endured yet another fire, four major hurricanes, and countless abuse from people, and it has undergone constant renovation and repairs. Yet through all of the disaster, the Narragansett Pier Casino still stands tall, a vibrant reminder of the town's rich past.
