South Carolina Aquarium's Animal Holding Facility, Charleston
South Carolina's Aquarium and Animal Holding Facility is the most visited attraction in Charleston. It offers the opportunity to view thousands of aquatic animals from the smallest to the largest. The theme of the aquarium is "from the mountains to the sea", which gives plenty of description of the exhibits one can view.
The exhibits and discovery labs describe the biodiversity which has placed South Carolina in the top ten or fifteen states. The wide variety of animals and plants located in this state are found in the exhibits and galleries located at the aquarium
This will not by a short sight seeing tour by any means. Take the time to learn about the many conservation programs being offered. One such program is obvious through the business practices and operations as they seek to encourage others to reduce, reuse and recycle.
Another exciting area at the facility is learning about how the aquarium works closely with state and federal agencies as well as wildlife rehabilitation facilities to rescue and rehabilitate injured and stranded wildlife. One species of wildlife very noticeable is the sea turtles. In May 2000 biologists were caring for and rehabilitating stranded sea turtles. Working with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, a program was established to assist with the recovery and release efforts of the endangered turtles found along the coast. It's through the work and effort of these and many other agencies that endangered turtles, and other species of wildlife are located, cared for, and then returned to their natural habitat as long as the condition allows for this to happen. Numerous species of wildlife have been saved through these efforts, conservation efforts and other programs through the aquarium.
