New York City
There’s a reason why people consider New York City to be the center of the world as well as the melting pot of America. New York City is a prime location for commerce, the arts, and museums. It has many historical aspects to it as well as some modern ones. For example, the city has many historical sites such as: the Natural Museum of History, the Metropolitan Museum of art, the Statue of Liberty, and the Guggenheim museum. It also has many modern sites such as, Times Square, wild nightlife, restaurants, the Wax Museum, and Broadway.
Times Square, named after the The New York Times, is a large and lively neighborhood in the borough of Manhattan. The theaters of Broadway and the huge neon and television-style signs have made Times Square a memorable sight. Times Square is also more of an urban aspect of New York City rather then the Village. Walking Broadway is the newest attraction to hit the Times Square; it makes Broadway come alive for theatre fans and also the visitors. Broadway is also another major attraction in Times Square. Broadway is the oldest north-south main thoroughfare in the city and is home to many Broadway theaters, which house many commercial musicals. This part of the Broadway is also known as The Great White Way.
After you are through touring Times Square you can head on to Central Park for a relaxing time. Central Park is a large urban, public park, located around Times Square. Central Park arose because of a poet, William Cullen Bryant. He believed that the city was getting to big and needed a great public park. Therefore, in 1853 the New York City legislature designated a 700 acre area for the development of the park. As the constuction of Central Park came under way many statues and monuments were added. However at first scluptures and statues were not allowed because of the “clutter” they would create. Many of the first statues were authors and poets. The better-known sculptors were also represented in Central Park, including Augustus Saint-Gaudens and John Quincy Adams Ward. Another well known statue is, a large memorial to Duke Ellington created by sculptor Robert Graham which was dedicated to him in 1997. The oldest sculpture in the Park is the "Cleopatra's Needle," which is actually an Egyptian obelisk of Tutmose III which is also much older than Cleopatra. It was donated to New York by the Khedive of Egypt.
Besides the history of Central Park, there is also the exciting aspect of it. In this 843 acre park, there also lies a beautiful zoo. You would never believe that a zoo and an 843 acre park would lie in The Concrete Jungle. Yet, it does, and it isnt some little zoo either, it is home to many rare and endangered species. The Central Park Zoo has only been around since 1988, however, its full history stetches back to the last century. This zoo is also very well known as the cities landmark which launched the modern trend of urban zoos. The zoo stretches from a steamy rain forest to an icy tundra. Consisting of an Anartic penguin habitat. It leads visitors through tropic, temperate, and even polar regions in order to meet these fascinating creatures. The zoo carries a variety of animals, extending from the tiny leafcutter ants to the gigantic polar bears.
There was also another portion that was added to the Central Park Zoo. This portion was The Tisch Children’s Zoo, which was added in 1997. This children’s zoo lets children and animal lovers to meet these extraordinary creatures and get up close. There are also year- round education classes and innovative public programs such as the zoo’s “wildlife theater”. These classes and programs encourage visitors of all ages to learn and understand more about the world around us. The classes also encourage all ages to become involved in the environment’s protection. Also through the American Zoo and Aquarium Association’s Species Survival Program, the zoo is involved in helping endangered species.
As you can see, New York City has something for everyone, for example, it has Broadway for the people who enjoy to see the plays and musicals, Times Square for people who like to go shopping and Central Park for those who are animal lovers and are aroused by nature. The city even has something for people who enjoy learning about the history around us, The Museum of Natural History. This museum has a staff of about one thousand and two hundred people and it also sponsors over one hundred field expeditions each year. The Museum was founded in 1869. It first resided in the Arsenal building of Central Park. In 1874, however, ground was broken for the construction of its present building, which now, occupies most of Manhattan Square. The Museum is very famous for its habitat groups of African, Asian and North American mammals, for the full-size model of a Blue Whale suspended in air in the hall of oceans, for the 62-foot Haida carved and painted war canoe from the Pacific Northwest, and for the "Star of India", the largest blue sapphire in the world. As you can see the Museum of Natural History contains very impressive findings. Another impressive exhibit is the anthropological collections. These collections feature Halls of Asian People and of Pacific People, of Man in Africa, Native American collections, and collections from Mexico and Central America.
The Hayden Planetarium, connected to the museum, is now a part of the Rose Center for Earth and Space, it is housed in a glass cube which contains the spherical Space Theater, designed by James Stewart Polshek. This Center was opened on February 19, 2000. The Museum also offers membership categories, with prices ranging from fiftey five dollars for individuals, to seven hundred fifty dollars for sponsors. The mueseum also includes a museum shop, library collection, anthroplogy division, and even invertebrate zoology. So if someone is in the city, they should be sure to visit there.
Another interesting museum that lies in New York City is Madam Tassaud’s Wax Museum. A wax museum or waxworks consists of a collection of wax figures representing famous people from history and modern times and they are exhibited in life-like poses. The making of a wax figurine also takes a lot of time. For example, the hair of a wax figurine is put it one strand at a time. Imagine how long it must take to weave a whole head of hair! Wax museums often have a special section called the chamber of horrors in which the more excruciating and disturbing exhibits are displayed. The most famous name associated with these wax museums is Madame Tussaud's. In 1835 Madame Tussaud established her first permanent exhibition in London's Baker Street. There is also a large Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum in Dam Square, Amsterdam and at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. The best thing about the wax museum is that the wax figures are so life like that it scares you and you could also pose with the figures; therefore, you can tell all your friends that you met a famous celebrity when you really did not.

In the American History, it is written how the Americans fought bravely for the their independence. The Statue of Liberty stands for that and you can only find it in New York City. The Statue of Liberty, in full “Liberty Enlightening the World”, is a statue, given to the U.S. by France in the late 19th century. The statue is located at the mouth of the Hudson River in New York Harbor as a welcome to all returning Americans, visitors, and immigrants. It is also said that The Statue of Liberty is often used as a symbol that personifies the entire nation of the United States, kind of like Uncle Sam.
It was also agreed upon between the French and the Americans that the American people would build the pedestal where the statue would stand, and the French people were responsible for the Statue and its assembly in the United States. However, because of the lack of funds in both France and America; they had to raise money and therefore the project took longer then it was estimated. In France, public fees, various forms of entertainment, and a lottery were some of the methods used to raise the 2,250,000 francs. The United States raised funds by hosting theatrical events, art exhibitions, auctions and prizes. These events assisted in providing the reamaining needed funds. As Italian-Americans left Manhattan for other boroughs and the suburbs in the middle of the Twentieth Century, the neighborhood known as Little Italy gradually shrank. As little Italy shrank Chinatown became larger. Chinatown is another little “Country” which resides in New York City. Chinatown is an area containing a large population of Chinese people within a city that is not predominantly Chinese. The best part about having little countries in the City is that you can visit two places in one. Another great part is that all the different types of foods you can try and see. You can also buy things that you couldn’t normally buy.
Besides all the sight seeing and tourist attractions, the best part of this city is that a tourist or anyone can get around with out a car! In fact, a person traveling with a car would be at a disadvantage. Going around the city by the use of mass transportation is way more practicle then going around in a car. For example, when you travel by private transpotation, you have to pay for gasoline, wait in traffic (which ruins your gas mileage), and also look for parking which can always be painful.
